Downspout Drainage Beneath a Sidewalk in Wilmington DE
The downspout connection and solid drainage pipe exposed during installation at the Wilmington, DE home.
At a home in Wilmington, Delaware, our crew at One Thousand Hands Horticulture installed a drainage system to carry water from the gutters out to the street. The route crossed an existing concrete sidewalk, so part of the job involved digging beneath the walkway to install the pipe while leaving the concrete intact.
Connecting the downspouts to solid drainage pipe
We used four-inch SDR 35 solid pipe with NDS fittings to connect the gutter downspouts to the drainage route. In the installation photos, the green pipe follows a trench through the narrow space between the house and fence, with a branch connecting the downspout at the corner of the home.

Passing beneath the sidewalk
At the sidewalk crossing, we dug from the sides to create a passage for the four-inch pipe beneath the concrete. That let us continue the drainage route without cutting out or replacing the sidewalk. Once the pipe was in place, we put the excavated area back while preserving the existing walking surface.

Including access for future cleaning
The downspout connections include a cleanout system to provide access for future maintenance. Together, the connections and solid pipe create a route for roof runoff to travel from the gutters to the street.
