The completed bluestone walkway in Media, PA, with custom stone steps and a low boulder wall beside the established garden.

When we returned to this home in Media, Pennsylvania, the goal was to carry an earlier phase of stonework through the front approach. Our crew at One Thousand Hands Horticulture replaced old pavers and wall block with a dimensional bluestone walkway, custom stone steps, and boulder material chosen to match the work already completed at the home.

Matching the house and the earlier stonework

We used the same boulder material as the previous phase to coordinate with both the house and the existing hardscape. The warm tones and irregular faces of the boulders echo the stone exterior, while the blue-gray walkway provides a more uniform walking surface alongside them.

Removing the old pavers and rebuilding the approach

The work began with removing the old pavers and wall block. With those materials out, we rebuilt the approach through the established landscape. The work photos show our crew preparing the area beside the front door and setting the new stone among the existing trees and planting beds.

Fabricating the steps and laying the bluestone

We fabricated the steps from much larger pieces of stone, shaping them into six-inch-high steps approximately five feet wide. The broad stone treads connect the different walkway levels, with boulders defining the edge of the adjacent planting bed.

For the walkway itself, we installed dimensional bluestone in a pattern of rectangular pieces. The layout widens at the front door and follows the route through the garden. Its straight joints contrast with the rougher boulder faces, tying the new paving into the earlier stonework.
