Two-Tier Natural Stone Boulder Wall in Garnet Valley, PA
Project Overview
Location: Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania
This project focused on creating a safer, more functional transition from the front of the home to the backyard while managing a significant grade change. The solution was a two-tier natural stone boulder wall that stabilizes the slope, improves access, and integrates naturally with the surrounding landscape.
The Challenge
The side yard dropped off sharply from the front of the home, creating a safety concern—especially for children—and making routine maintenance difficult. The client wanted a solution that reduced the severity of the slope without feeling overly engineered or intrusive.
Our Approach
We designed and installed a two-tier retaining system using large, natural stone boulders. Each tier rises roughly four feet, with enough horizontal spacing between them to allow a commercial lawn mower to pass through comfortably. This preserved usability while softening the visual impact of the elevation change.
By using natural stone rather than manufactured block, the wall blends into the setting and feels consistent with the home’s surroundings.
Key Design Details
- Two-tier boulder retaining wall
- Approximately four feet of rise per tier
- Spacing designed for safe foot traffic and lawn equipment access
- Natural stone boulders selected for durability and visual continuity
- Improved circulation from the front entry to the backyard
The Result
The finished wall transforms what was once a steep, hazardous edge into a usable and visually grounded landscape feature. It creates a safer route around the home, improves long-term maintenance access, and adds structure without drawing attention away from the house itself.
