Project Journal: Native Plant Bed in Wilmington, DE
In Wilmington, we helped a homeowner add a new native planting bed to the front corner of their property: a small but intentional way to bring more life and variety into an otherwise traditional yard.
We started by reshaping the existing bed lines and removing a section of sod to make space for the new plants. Then we installed native plugs , young perennials and grasses chosen for their adaptability and ecological value. These plants will develop deep roots over time, improving the soil and supporting local pollinators as they grow.
A layer of mulch was added at the end, both to protect the young plants and to help suppress weeds while they establish. As the garden fills in over the next few seasons, the mulch will give way to a healthy, self-sustaining plant community.
This project shows how even a small change - one garden bed, one corner - can shift the feel of a property. Native plants don’t have to replace everything to make an impact. Sometimes, they just need a space to take root.
Native planting doesn’t have to mean a full yard conversion. Whether it’s a single bed or a larger garden space, we can design and install plantings that support pollinators and fit seamlessly into your landscape.
